The Valentine Box

It started with a box for collecting heart wishes…

Among the constants in Taylor Mulvaney’s life are the heart-shaped box her father made for her, the mysterious hearts she sometimes sees, and her longtime crush on Luke Montgomery.  The valentine box has a way of connecting her and Luke time and again.  And even after Luke breaks her heart on the night before he leaves their hometown of Sweetwater, Kentucky for good, he always stays on her mind.

The box brings them back together when they least expect it.

Fifteen years later, Taylor still sees hearts.  And now she even makes them, baking heart-shaped treats at the Sweetheart Bake Shop.  After a rough start in life, she’s found her way.  Until, that is, Luke comes home for his father’s funeral, bringing a deluge of old feelings flooding back.  Before she knows it, a note dropped in her still-beloved valentine box has Taylor swept up in helping him save his family’s horse farm – and trying not to fall back in love with the guy who once shattered her heart.

How will it end?

Could Luke really want Taylor the way she’s always wanted him?  Can she trust in the future to turn out better than the past?  The valentine box is still working its magic to draw them together all these years later, along with the hearts that always guide her.  But can she set her fears aside long enough to trust in a second chance at love?

A Note from Toni

When I started the first Box Book, The Wedding Box, it was an exercise in trying something new, taking an unusual concept and crafting a viable story around it. What it ended up delivering was catharsis, as it was the first book I’d written after the loss of both my parents. Since then, the Box Books have continued delivering that to me, in different ways. Without my planning it, they seem to draw in tidbits and memories from my youth, and in some cases even help me work through unresolved conflicts. Some readers have called these books “healing,” and it turns out they’re healing for the author, too.

I loved writing Taylor and Luke’s story – Taylor in particular became a character very near and dear to my heart. Like Taylor, I was a victim of some bullying in my childhood. I wish I could say I handled it as well as she did, but writing that part of Taylor’s story was one of the cathartic parts for me. And random fun fact: Most of the horses on the Montgomery farm are named after horses from my own family farm when I was a little girl. Like I said, these books just seem to draw on my past. Maybe it’s the Kentucky setting. I was born and raised in Kentucky, and I still live there, but I’ve never set my books there until now. Writing about “home” has been a special part of this “book journey” for me. And with that, I hope you enjoy your visit to Sweetwater, Kentucky!
